Become a better photographer

Meet Roger.

Like the rest of us, Roger is pushed into a new and unique challenge each week, but where his talents truly shine is in street photography. He often captures a lone subject, perfectly placed for strong composition, dramatic light, or emotional storytelling. Roger has a real knack for isolating his subject within the frame, and this alone makes it worth following his work! This week marks Roger’s 213th frame in the project!

Your life in 30 words or less

I gave up the excitement of life as an accountant in 2020 to indulge my passions for golf, volunteering (I am chair of trustees of a local charity) and photography.

Can you share 2 images, one from your past, and one more recent, that show your evolution as a photographer?

What has been your favorite style of shooting lately?

I’m unashamedly a street photographer and tend to shoot this style on 52Frames if I can possibly shoehorn it into the week’s challenge. There are a few sub-styles of street photography and I am definitely not a head hidden behind a balloon kind of guy. I tend more towards a fine art style of image, one that I would be happy to hang on a wall at home. Of course, whether others would hang them in their home is another matter.

What was the first photo you ever submitted to 52Frames?

How did you find out about 52Frames?

My friend and golf buddy, Ken Benoit, nagged me to join. Best thing he ever did.

What submission are you most proud of and why?

Back From The Brink: from Week 18 of 2025 (Negative Space)
Back From The Brink: from Week 18 of 2025 (Negative Space)

Not a street photo and not my best submission, technically or artistically, by any means. But six days before I submitted this I had a major heart attack and almost died (Technically I did die. Twice). I’m proud that I managed to keep my streak going, even if I was a bit foolhardy in expending so much effort in taking the photograph. It’s hard to explain, but I had the idea while I was lying in hospital that week and just had to get the shot. I definitely used up most of the patience of my family on the Sunday evening when I took it.

One tip you’d like to share?

I’m not one for rules, so a few tips here. Don’t take it all too seriously. I try to inject a bit of humour in my submissions where I can, usually in the write up. Just try to be consistent and get a shot every week. That’s the point isn’t it. They are not all going to be bangers and a good old 52 Frames “streak saver” is very much allowed when circumstances dictate.

Why is 52Frames meaningful to you?

It allows me to indulge one of my passions, get my camera out each week and “see”. There’s nothing quite like capturing that shot and thinking “I really like this”. It’s quite the buzz. And of course, how much golf can a man play in a week? I need something else to keep me occupied.
