Become a better photographer
Week 1 Self Portrait (2023)
Featured Framer

Meet Susan.

Susan’s work is an explosion of creativity and personality. Quirky, abstract, and full of character, her photos have a way of pulling you in and keeping you there. From vibrant wildlife shots to interesting (and wacky) self-portraits, every frame feels alive and unmistakably “Susan.” You never quite know what she’ll surprise you with next, and that’s part of the magic. This week marks Susan’s 567th frame in the project!

Your life in 30 words or less

Retired Math teacher, photographer, Nana, wife to an amazing man, and owner of new puppy. I love to photograph the wildlife in my area, nature, and play with my Lensbaby Lenses.

Can you share 2 images, one from your past, and one more recent, that show your evolution as a photographer?

What has been your favorite style of shooting lately?

I love taking photos of wildlife in area, along with trying to catch birds in flight. I tried still life, street, and don’t like it. I’m an introvert, love to be along out with my camera, walking by the river by my house.

What was the first photo you ever submitted to 52Frames?

How did you find out about 52Frames?

I saw a FB page about it, checked out the FB page, and decided to try it for a year. That was over 10 years ago.

What submission are you most proud of and why?

Week 46-Bathroom (2023)

I was stumped at what to shoot for this, everything I tried, just didn’t speak to me. It was getting late in the week, so I thought, I’d do a ‘consistency’ photo, set up tripod and focused on shower door, set timer, got into the shower and at the last minute put my hand on the door. I only took one shot, thought it would do. After editing, I thought it was about the best self-portrait of myself I ever took.

One tip you’d like to share?

Never stop shooting, even when the themes don’t excite you, go out and look for that photo. There have been themes I really dislike, but I make myself keep going, getting out there and trying my best.

Why is 52Frames meaningful to you?

It’s like a family, when I started there were maybe 200 photos, and now, thousands. I’ve met some great people, learned more about photography, and it is a way to keep my ‘old’ brain young. And, sometimes, forcing me out of my comfort zone.
