Become a better photographer
Self Portrait, Week 1, 2023

Meet Isaac.

The first thing that comes to mind when looking at Isaac’s photos are “larger than life”. From extreme wide angles, vistas, and drone photography, to blurred movement, illusions, and close-up details. Every photo has a pattern. Every photo has an intention. There’s a whole lot of story in each frame. Isaac’s photos are a real treat to follow each week. This week marks Isaac’s 519th frame, a 9x Weekly Warrior!

Your life in 30 words or less

Despite being very much of a science person, I have always enjoyed challenging my creative side. After 25 years as ENT surgeon, I appreciate something that is different and creative every single time.

Can you share 2 images, one from your past, and one more recent, that show your evolution as a photographer?

What has been your favorite style of shooting lately?

I have always been a landscape and travel photographer. I admire the beauty of nature as well as the grandeur of many man-made structures. Plus, I don’t regularly have too many willing subjects who would submit to participate for portrait or other human photography. But lately I have found some ways of experimenting with human and fashion photography, many of them blended into my signature landscape and travel photos. I do have to say that I have surprised myself to discover a new side of me.

What was the first photo you ever submitted to 52Frames?

How did you find out about 52Frames?

I come from a long line of photographers. I had always dabbled with photography without any formal training. In 2015 a friend of mine introduced me to 52F. I immediately loved the concept of weekly challenges and all the new lessons I have learned.

What submission are you most proud of and why?

This photo won 2nd place that week. It is a composite image of 40 individual top-down drone images taken at different spots around the harbor in our summer getaway. I blended all the images in photoshop for this expansive panoramic picture, and applied various edits to really make the image pop. I am not proud of this image solely because of the 2nd place honor, but for being able to combine my passion for drone photography with my photoshop skills (that are admittedly better than photography skills). The following summer I undertook a much harder challenge of mapping the entire town with 800 drone images, and stitched them together for a spectacular giant 600 megapixel panorama. Unfortunately the theme that week did not fit for me to submit the upgraded image.

One tip you’d like to share?

Never stop looking at the world through the point of view of a lens. I always walk around and find inspiration in the most mundane objects and things. Look for unique angles, shapes, lights, combinations, or whatever else you think might make a great photo. Always keep shooting. Keep editing. Keep posting. Get feedback. Learn and apply the lessons for next time.”

Why is 52Frames meaningful to you?

Our regular jobs and lives can easily become monotonous and routine. I strive to escape that with creativity. And for the past 10 years that has been in the form of photography (and some videography). What I specially like about 52F is the weekly assignments. I look forward to learning about the theme of the week, and then see how I can make it happen. Sometimes I know exactly what to do with the theme, and sometimes I struggle to find the right subject. Sometime I set up a whole fancy story line with subjects and props, and sometimes I take a picture of something already around me.

  1. Wow, incredibly complex, beautiful images! I’m so impressed! I haven’t gotten anywhere near knowing how to layer images like that… one step at a time!

  2. I’ve always been impressed with your photos and now I know why: your attitude of keeping it fresh and alive as you go about life.
