It’s hard enough taking a portrait of a humanoid, yet Ginger somehow manages to capture absolute MAGIC with her amazing portraits of dogs. These cute and cuddly subjects aside, a scroll down Ginger’s feed is a masterclass in Depth of Field, Composition, and Lighting. This week marks Ginger’s 250th all-time submission!

Can you share 2 images, one from your past, and one more recent, that show your evolution as a photographer?
What has been your favorite style of shooting lately?
Well, dogs (for the third year running!) are my preferred subject and I am very much a “naked dogs in nature” fan, but recently I’ve been incorporating “industrial”/architectural elements into my photos and I’m really digging it. Plus, I always lug my off camera flash, just in case I need that little extra oomph to augment any natural light.
What was the first photo you ever submitted to 52Frames?
How did you find out about 52Frames?
I spent three years in a different weekly photography challenge before discovering 52F. Impressed by the creativity and technical excellence on their Instagram feed, I immediately joined and signed the manifesto. 🥳
What submission are you most proud of and why?
I created this frame two years before I realized my calling as a dog photographer, and I had been noodling on the concept for two years before that! The coordination was heavy – scheduling my friends and their critters to come to my home over several days while I was grieving the loss of one of my own dogs (she’s represented by the empty dog bed). I loved blending the technical aspects (camera settings, angle, light) with the more difficult task of eliciting planned behaviors from the pets. Once the photos were all taken, then it was back to the technical (my happy place), piecing it all together in the post process. I still love this photo four years later, and when I view it, it brings me back to the happy chaos of creating it.
One tip you’d like to share?
Though tempting, don’t skip the challenges you don’t like. 😝 I’ve discovered that the prompts that I (heavily) resist often result in my favorite images. Instead, find a way to make the brief palatable to YOU. Bonus tip: the quality of a photo doesn’t always reflect the effort invested; high effort doesn’t guarantee a high-quality image. That was a hard lesson for me. In fact, I still grapple with it! 😂
Why is 52Frames meaningful to you?
Apparently, I’m a homework and deadline junkie! 🙃🤗 52F gives me a reason to recruit and interact with dogs on the regular, and it guides those sessions and allows me to be creative. Some of my favorite photos exist solely because I joined 52F and stuck with it (through tantrums and waning phojo)!
Congrats on the spotlight Ginger! She also pulled me into this great group years ago. Any time I shoot my pups, I think “how would Ginger approach this?”
