Your life in 30 words or less
I’m divorced with no kids, but 2 adorable cats, and work as a lawyer/project manager for a legal tech consulting group, with a background in studio art and art history.
Can you share 2 images, one from your past, and one more recent, that show your evolution as a photographer?
What has been your favorite style of shooting lately?
I got my start shooting black and white in college, and I recently have been drawn to it again, after many years of enjoying exploring color. I’d really like to dive into b&w abstract minimalism a bit.
What was the first photo you ever submitted to 52Frames?
How did you find out about 52Frames?
A random Google search looking for lists I could pick from to create my own weekly photo challenges.
What submission are you most proud of and why?
This photo is near and dear to my heart because it is based on a line in a song by my favorite band (“here comes the joker, with his silly grin, he carries a martini made of bathtub gin”). It was my first ever 52 Picks selection, which was such a great honor. I am really critical of myself and have a tendency to second guess any art I create, so it was truly wonderful to be recognized by my peers for this image. Everything about it was outside my comfort zone – it’s a self-portrait, staged, with props, and in color – but having it work gave me a real boost in confidence.
One tip you’d like to share?
Just keep shooting! We are so lucky to be living in the digital age of photography where we don’t have to worry about the cost of film or how many shots we are able to take. Mistakes and mis-snaps don’t matter, and the only way we can learn is by doing. Try things you think might be cool; try things you think might be crazy; try things you think might be ugly… just try!
Why is 52Frames meaningful to you?
I have been an artist my entire life, but I don’t live the life of an artist anymore. My world is dominated by a stressful, sometimes stodgy, career. 52Frames has given me an outlet for my otherwise unused creativity that I can always manage to fit into my crazy schedule. Like exercising, being in nature, reading, and cuddling my cats, I’ve come to realize that I need this weekly chance to look at the world differently to maintain my sanity and preserve my peace. I feel blessed to have found such a kind, supportive community that gives me a chance to get away from the mundane and be an artist again for a little while each week.
Congrats Lauren…
