Your life in 30 words or less

I’m a busy body ADHD’er who loves when my hands are being creative. I prefer spending time with family and friends than being tied to a screen (including a camera screen).

Can you share 2 images, one from your past, and one more recent, that shows your evolution as a photographer?

Week 9 Depth of field (2018) - my 4th ever submission and first time I had to photography another person. I chose my best friend Andie but her skin tone turned out super orange and I wasn't confident with my camera.

Week 14 Fill the Frame (2023)- my 252nd submission. I photographed Andie's son Zac. I was a lot more confident with my camera, had a better idea how I wanted to edit my photos and I wasn't afraid of getting up close and person as I photographed him.

What has been your favorite style of shooting lately?

Creative portraits is my ‘favourite’ style. That is to say – I love portraits and having the freedom to edit them creatively.

What was the first photo you ever submitted to 52Frames?

Week 6 Architecture 2018 was my first ever submission 52frames. I couldn't decide which building to submit... the library or the Selfridges shopping centre so I did an in camera double exposure that features both buildings.

How did you find out about 52Frames?

I was on a long train journey and was reading a camera magazine that I’d bought at the train station. I was hoping to get some camera tips to make my photography better and I came across an article about something called 52frames so I looked it up!

What submission are you most proud of and why?

Week 14: Blur the action (2018)
Week 14: Blur the action (2018)

I’m proud of many of my photos and this is an old photo but I’d say that this was perhaps the first 52frame photograph that I was proud of. It was my 9th ever submission and first ever self-portrait. I took learning about photography for the challenge theme so seriously that I spent ages researching about my flashgun and how to achieve this look in camera. In capturing this shot, I got my head around lighting, shutter speed and that fact that I didn’t need photoshop to create a beautiful photograph. I realised that I had stumbled on something great with 52frames and this creative style of photography was something I wanted to do more of.

One tip you’d like to share?

My one tip is to try and remember that 52frames is your own journey and that’s really the only thing that matters.

Make mistakes with your photography… take risks with your editing… forgive those embarrassing last minute submissions because life was busy and you chose to live it rather than capture it. Every once in a while, you’ll capture a gem of a photo that will land so perfectly on your heart that it will remind you of why you started this journey and why you continue.

Why is 52Frames meaningful to you?

52frames is meaningful because the community is so much more than just photography. Through the weekly challenges, I’ve discovered new places in my city, spoken to strangers, made new friends, learnt about and been more aware of different cultures, religions and social and political issues, walked a little bit slower at times to take in my surrounding and most importantly – specifically looked to give positive feedback in my daily life when others have just highlighted negatives. All of these are by-products of my 52frames involvement. Who knew buying that camera magazine at the train station would have been so life changing!?
